Are You Willing To Put Yourself In A Position To Be Used By God?
In a few weeks I will be part of an amazing event and I invite you to consider if God may be leading you to get involved in some way. Over the past month or so I have been motivated to take steps of faith in a new direction. My motivation comes from something I read in a book recently that really changed my perspective on how to be (and what it means to be) a Christian. The book was about spiritual gifts. I wanted to know my spiritual gift, since becoming a Christian, and this book was promising to reveal my spiritual gift to me – or at least that is what I thought. What I came to realize through reading this book however, was that I was asking the wrong question. The question we should be asking is not “What is my spiritual gift?” Rather it should be, “How can I use it to further the Lord’s kingdom on this earth?”
The answer to this new question is in one of my favorite songs by Matthew West, “Do Something”. There is a line in that song where he’s talking about pain and suffering in the world, and he says “God, why don’t you do something?”, and God replies: “I did. I created you.” You may be thinking as I was, “Ok, so I’m supposed to do something to discover my spiritual gift, but what?” I’m starting to realize it doesn’t matter so much what I do as much as simply listening for his direction and being willing to respond.
Even when I’m at my spiritual best, I realize how little I truly understand about my Lord and Creator. It is my growing belief now that he wants us to put ourselves into a position to be used by him – anywhere at all, and then we can simply let him decide where to put us. It is amazing what he can and will do, when we obey him on this. If we pray about it, and think about an area where we might feel passionate, a verse might pop into our heads, to at least give us a starting point.
For me it was one I had seen a lot recently. Matthew 25:35 says, “For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink…” If no verse comes to mind for you, I’d say pick up your Bible, pray for an answer to the question above, and then start reading. Chances are, God will answer you. So not long ago, I was reflecting on this, and prayed, “God, today I’m going to put myself into a position to be used by you, so please put me wherever you want me to be.”
It was my intention to go volunteer at Loaves and Fishes being available for anything they needed, and see where it led. I had previously organized with someone there that I would phone them that morning to make arrangements to come in and see where I could be used. Within an hour of that prayer however, I received a phone call from someone else at Loaves and Fishes, asking me to come in to deliver their lunches to the schools in Red Deer, as their regular driver was not able to make it. What an immediate answer to my prayer – before I could even act, he already had a plan in motion for me. This is not at all where I pictured myself, but it is where God did, so that is where I went.
While there, I became aware of an event that they are hosting in Red Deer, called “The Coldest Night of the Year”. This event is held in dozens of towns and cities across Canada. On February 21st, thousands of people in dozens of cities across the country will go out with their friends and families and walk 2, 5 or 10km to raise money for (as we say at Crossroads) the lost, the last, the least, the little, and the nearly dead. In Red Deer, the funds raised will go to Loaves and Fishes and their programs to help the homeless, hurting and helpless in Red Deer. Please consider joining us on this. You can join an existing team or start your own team; or you can sponsor a team or one of our walkers, who are raising money to answer God’s call in Matthew 25. It may not be where you pictured yourself, but who knows what God has planned if you are willing to put yourself in position to be used by him.
1-Corinthians 2:9 “…No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” For more information on “The Coldest Night of the Year” fundraising walk, please visit: www.coldestnightoftheyear.org/reddeer You can also email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 403-347-1844.
